You can paint ceilings with gloss but you will need to be sure you have excellent ventilation as the surface painted with gloss is sealed and will not breath as emulsions do this can cause moulds to form and all sorts of difficulties later on.
No, you use emulsion on ceilings. Gloss is oil based and it will be harder to repaint over gloss with emulsion next time you need to paint it. Try a silk emulsion if you want a ';sheen'; to your ceiling.

Depends on the composition of the ceiling.Many are plasterboard,which won't cover well with gloss paint,being very absorbent.

The intended purpose of gloss is a hard finish coat for wood and metal able to withstand the elements and other punishment. Gloss will be much harder to apply and get a good finish on a ceiling than emulsion. If you want an easy paint that can be wiped on a ceiling try Dulux quick-drying eggshell. If you have no special reason for a hard wearing paint, a ceiling is the ideal place to put cheaper standard emulsion as it takes no punishement.
