Anything to make a gloss paint finish matt/flat?

is there any liquid or substance that when poured or rubbed on a glossy finish would get rid of the sheen and reflective surface and leave the surface flatt matt?

thanks allAnything to make a gloss paint finish matt/flat?
Clean first then cover with an eggshell finish paint, particularly hard wearing. If you must use an oil based coating you could also mix undercoat with gloss paint, to the level of sheen you want. Even before ';woodsheen'; paints were available, the trade , including myself, used undercoat/gloss mixes to cover better and reduce the gloss effect. Sanding may produce spots/patches where the base material is exposed on ';high'; areas. Am interested to know why you aren't just covering with matt emulsion? :-)Anything to make a gloss paint finish matt/flat?
Rubbing alcohol on it will do it and/or a real fine sander. You don't say if it's wood, metal, plaster, etc.

Depending on the size of the job I'd just paint over it with a matt finish if it really matters. I personally prefer gloss finishes as they look nicer for longer %26amp; reflect more light.
gloss will always be gloss but if you use one of them small foam rollers it will change the finish to one that is more matt
If the area is small you can use a spray can of clear sealer . they come in different gloss levels and can be applied easily without repainting. If the area is large try using a brush and /or roller and apply polycrylics by minwax they have various sheen levels also. check cans for compatibility and also test small area first.
Yeah you have to use a satin finish gloss instead, it's the same as gloss but without the shine. It'll be kept next to the normal gloss in any DIY shop
Lightly sand with fine grit sandpaper and apply a satin/eggshell finish
yes take the tin of gloss back and change it for matt

How do you get gloss paint off your clothes?

You don't! Well, if you are really speedy and immediately rinse the spill with water, you might get some of it out. But paint is very difficult to remove from fabric, especially if it isn't water based, like most gloss paints. If it's been washed and dried in the machine, it's pretty much set into the fabric. Maybe you can stitch an applique over the painted area, or more fun--paint an actual design using the paint splat area! Maybe there needs to be a lady bug or something right there on your clothes?

Sorry this happened, but it's part of living a creative life, to have evidense of your creativity on your clothes! How do you get gloss paint off your clothes?

Runs form using gloss paint?

I painted my hall banister with gloss and there is loads of runs on it.. how do i get rid of them? is it only sandpaper i use.. is there anything else that is easier lol.. do i just sand the runs or will i have to sand all of the gloss off?Runs form using gloss paint?
Well, you've gotten a lot of good suggestions. If you're in a hurry, though, I would get a razor blade and remove the gummy runs so the remainder will dry faster, then sand to get the smooth finish. Any time you paint, you have to continuously go back and reinspect the work you have just done, and catch the runs before they start to set. You will find the results much more satisfactory if you do your quality control before the paint dries. If you do that, your repairs will be flawless!Runs form using gloss paint?
the paint is to runny. you probably put to much on brush. less is defiantly more lots of thin coats rather than one thick coat. if it is old paint on banister. then you really should strip back to wood. but if the runs are from your work then a power mouse sander should do. with various grades of paper..
first of all, you will need to wait for the runs to dry - depending on the thickness of the runs, it will take ages and ages for the run to dry and harden enough to sand down without clogging the paper

4 thin coats are far better than 2 thick!
Sand it back again, only this time when you paint , go back an hour later and touch in again where the runs start...

Its a common problem on spindles....Dont put too much on this time either...
I agree with everyone above...also, make sure you are using the right applicators. (should say on the back of the can)
Why didn't you catch the runs while you were painting?

Anyway, yes, sand just the runs off and repaint. Be careful this time.
~*~-You will have to sand them off and repaint the areas you sand. Next time use very thin coats instead of thick coats to avoid runs.
Horrible job sanding gloss paint, try non drip gloss next time, not completely non drip, but much easier to handle.

have you tried nail polish remover?
try making a paste of TSP and water. Put the paste on the spot(s) and letting them soak for twenty minutes. In twenty min scrub the spot with a stiff brush and then launder as usual.

The down side is.....you have another pair of painting pants.

Was it a cheaper paint? if so that might have something to do with it. You might want to get in touch with the manufacturer.

How can i get white gloss paint off a leather suite?? will white spirit be ok, many thanks?

Use a steamer but don't let the paint melt too much or it will just spread. Heat just enough to soften and you should then be able to lift or roll it off. Be carefull with any spirit as it could damage the colour or the leather. Meths is probably the best one to try after the steamer has removed most of it.How can i get white gloss paint off a leather suite?? will white spirit be ok, many thanks?

I used nail varnish remover on mine and it took the top layer p off the leather and made it worse, try ringing a furniture shop. They will at least tell you what not to put on it.
Why dont u paint the entire suite white ? giving the illusion u have brought a new one to all your friends.
depends how long it has been on .if still soft try putting baby oil on cotton bud not turps/cleaners/nail remover.after use leathercleaner in circular motions
please don't try nail varnish remover it will take the colour out of the leather. have a look in the telephone directory for a leather cleaning specialist and ring them for advice just to be on the safe side.
I've used a product called Goofoff to remove dried paint from a cotton shirt. I had to rub and rub and then launder, but it worked quite well. I don't know how it would work with leather.
ring up someone like dfs ask their advise make out you got the suite from them
try soapy water first then try the white spirits
Not really as it can stain leather. You need to get some leather cleaner - Furniture shops or Halfords would stock this.

Can you gloss paint over old gloss paint?

i am decorating the bathroom and i need to gloss paint the skirting boards. Do I need to do anything to the skirting boards first? Can you gloss paint over old gloss paint?
Lightly sand them first to rough the surface. You will get a better bond that way.Can you gloss paint over old gloss paint?
Rub down with glass paper so that the surface is no longer glossy. Apply one coat of white undercoat and when dry paint a coat of gloss. For a great finish rub this gloss coat down when dry and give a second coat of gloss. If you use one coat paint then still do a second coat after rubbing down the first coat. Leave for at least 2 days before using the bathroom so that the surface hardens.
You can gloss straight on gloss with just rubbing down the surface first, but it is poor painting practice. The new gloss needs an undercoat which is a softer paint and acts as a buffer for knocks and like an anti-slip mat between the hard shiny old and new gloss. Also if you only gloss on gloss the next time you come to paint and you try to rub it down it will probably peel and roll off. I would only do one gloss on an interior.
In short yes you can. Painting is all about preparation and with the right preparation you can definately paint gloss paint over gloss paint.

If they are in good condition you can apply gloss but you will have to give them a good sanding down first so that the new paint has a good key. Alternatively...You can give them a sanding and a coat of undercoat which will make it an easier to gloss onto....good luck Fred
You are supposed to be able to with the paint now. I find though that if the old paint is yellowing you have to give it 2 coats anyway. It never looks as well as if I give it an undercoat first.
to do a good job the answer is no rub the gloss work down and then use an undercoat then you can gloss the paintwork after the undercoat is dry

    good luck
you can brush a coat of wil-bond on it...it eliminates the need for sanding and will help the top coat bond better...
the least you will have to do is rub it down with glass paper to give the paint something to key to
Depends how fussy you are.I always painted over the old gloss if it was sound
degrease it with a spirit ..then off you go you might as well....99%of world does

Every time i paint anything (gloss white) it does not stay white for long, but goes an off white. why?

is it because i don't stir the paint?Every time i paint anything (gloss white) it does not stay white for long, but goes an off white. why?
are you using oil based paint?? oil paint not exposed to sunlight will turn yellow.Every time i paint anything (gloss white) it does not stay white for long, but goes an off white. why?
dust, smoke, outdoor pollution. NOT because you don't stir the paint, though you really should.
If you are using oil based (alkyd) paint it is the laquer that is turning yellow. I had same problem so I got a GOOD QUALITY primer and semi-gloss latex paint. Sanded and repainted and have not had a problem with yellowing and it is just as durable as the alkyd.
Good quality white paint has a lot of suspended solids which contain the color and finish qualities. You should always stir paint in a fashion whereby you bring up the solids on the bottom so they are mixed in. If you can't seem to get a good consistency or suspect there are some solids still on the bottom, bring it to a Lowes, home depot, Walmart or anywhere they sell paint and ask them to put in their mixer. You might want them to check the quality of the paint before you go home so that way if the paint has degraded, you can purchase another gallon and save yourself a trip.
You definitely need to stir your paint in the future. It might be stains that are coming back through your paint. There is a product called kilz that will block these stains, you put it on like paint and then paint over after it dries. I have had this problem and

this product works great. good luck hope this helps
    Do you smoke??
It's normal because white attracts dirt, dust, smoke....
There are many shades of white. It depends on weather it is pure white, Navajo white, Swiss Coffee white or any number of shades of white.
Smokers in the enviroment ? Nicotine ! or Grease from cooking enviroment

1st Clean the surface with a professional wall washing

    2nd Apply KILZ

3rd Use a non yellowing Gloss White Paint . ( Most reputable brands are non-yellowing )
You are probably not priming the walls or furniture first and the old colors are bleeding through. Yes, you need to stir the paint well so all of the pigment gets distributed well.If you use gas heat, it can trun white to a yellowish tint also. You can wash that to remove it.

Will you share your secrets for cleaning a paint brush after use with satin finish and gloss paints.?

Rather not use solvents or spirits, don't want to spoil my kitchen sink. And how do you keep the brushes soft after cleaning?

I know lots of these paints are water solvent based paints, but would like your ideas please? Will you share your secrets for cleaning a paint brush after use with satin finish and gloss paints.?
I have a nifty little thingie that you put on your electric drill (bought in the UK). You pop your paint brush (or roller) on the end of it, then pop it inside an old bucket, turn the drill on and off the paint comes - sticks the sides of the bucket (which I use for the same purpose over and over again) and your brush or roller is left feeling good as new!

A quick wash in soapy water for gloss brushes afterwards and - done job! Very easy, uses very little water and much less hassle.

I'll see if I can find if it is still available - unless anybody else know s if it is?Will you share your secrets for cleaning a paint brush after use with satin finish and gloss paints.?
Use neat washing up liquid work it right in then rinse with cold water you may have to do it several times though.
Satin finish emulsion washes out fine in warm soapy water. To remove gloss paint you really do have to use a solvent - white spirit or one of the proprietary brush cleaners. After removing the paint I also wash these in soapy water and store them wrapped up in old newspaper.

To avoid the solvent coming into contact with anything important I have the white spirit in an old jar and use an old bucket to wash them in.
Wash your brushes as normal in fairy liquid etc, or invest in some brush cleaner, after you have washed them in fairy, place then in the brush cleaner, this gets rid of the residue that is in the'stock' of the brush, then rinse, and then soak them for 10 mins in a fabric conditioner, or after they have been washed etc, let them dry thouroughly, and get some baby oil and work this thru the brisles, then leave, they will be as soft as anything.
    clean them in white spirit.

where you bought the paintget it

you wont get t5he paint out otherwise

    and use a jamjar
if its water based use soap and warm water

if its enamel use turpentyne than soap with warm water
White spirits in a jar. But if you haven't finished using them, put them (the brush parts), in a polythene bag until the next day.

Turn your paint pots upside down too. That way, whenever you need the paint in the future, the skin will be at the bottom and the paint will be at the top.
    Bin them!!
First of all, you won't spoil your kitchen sink with spirits. It's not exactly nice to have turps in your kitchen, but as long as you clean it up afterwards it will do no harm. Turps will get rid of the paint on the brushes, just make sure you really thoroughly rinse them with it, and washing up liquid will get rid of the turps.

But you can bypass your kitchen sink altogether by washing the brushes in a jar and pouring the turps directly down the drain outside.

And as long as you've cleaned the brushes thoroughly they will still be soft when they dry.
I am assuming that is is a water based paint you are talking about.. When finishing, I simplly wipe off excess with a paper towel...(wipe the brush that is), then putting it into ample water where I work the brush to gest out the excess paint.. change water and do it again... change water and do it again until the paint brush is clean.. THEN I hang it to dry with the bristles pointed up
The best thing if you don't want to use solvents is normal washing up liquid (the kind for washing dishes in the sink). They're made for breaking up grease and work really well on oil based paints.
Remove as much paint as possible with rag or newspaper before washing. It is better to use white spirit, or something similar. You can put it down the drain outside, no need to mess up your sink! I re-use the same spirit, if possible, by storing it in a separate container, and letting the paint deposit settle in the bottom for a few days. Brushes stay soft if they are cleaned thoroughly.....
Water.... use a water hose to clean them with water.....
    GAS THEN SOAP AND WATER
I great way is not to clean them if you are going to reuse them and the stain or paint. Wrap a plastic bag around the brush and put it in the freezer.
    buy a new paint brush!

P.S. or maybes a new husband!
Combination of white spirit (or turps) washing up liquid and hot water I have always found it the best
Get most of the paint off with either turps or white spirit, then wash in warm soapy water.
Boil a pot of hot water and let the brus sit in it for about 10 mins, dump out the water and run it under the faucet w/ cold water and, Liquid laundry softener works wonders.....just make sure you rinse it thoroughly
Only way to clean is with spirits. Marks left on sink come off real easy. Buy water solvent paints where ever possible. Brushes will never come up soft after cleaning with any solvent - how clean/soft do you need them to be anyway? I got fed up of spending good money on brushes then have them go hard/dry and gritty so I buy cheaper ones and bin them. If you do clean them, when they are almost dry wrap the bristles with nice soft cloth (helps to absorb moisture and retain shape) and store somewhere dry. Job done!

flat and matte finishes are hard to clean and stain pretty easily
Its almost impossible to hide wall imperfections when using high gloss paint unless you put a textured finish on the wall like a knock down or use flat or satin paint
You will need to fill the imperfections in with spackle and sand it smooth. It may take several coats and a lot of sanding.
You will never be able to hide the imperfections for high gloss.
Use flat paint or matte. It will hde the best.

How do you get white gloss paint out of a black jacket?

Try a solvent called OOPS! It will remove dried latex paint and some oil paints from fabric. Use a white cloth with this stuff because it will cause some dyes to bleed. Test on a hidden area of the jacket first, someplace like in a pocket or behind a zipper. You can buy OOPS! in the paint section of a hardware store. How do you get white gloss paint out of a black jacket?
try some w hite spirits/turps. You can get stain removers like stain devil brands... or go to a specilaist like a dry cleaners for advice.
Try Hair Conditioner. Let it soak for a couple of minutes and scrape with a butter knife.
Paint thinners or turpentine might help if its still wet. Otherwise throw jacket away - sorry.
Thinners is for cellulose paints as used on cars. Turps wont work if the paint is dry. If still wet rub gently with a soft cloth soaked in turps without spreading the paint. If paint is dry you could dab with paint remover to soften, but be prepared to use water to stop the action if necessary. Either way you may have a residual mark

Can I apply flat paint to a ceiling previously painted with semi-gloss?

first of all you have to know whether or not it is oil based paint or latex. if it is latex then yes it would be fine but if it is oil then it might still have a sheen to it just depends on the color.it would still be a good idea if you prime it first but get the primer tinted whatever color you plan on painting the cieling. then i would apply atleast 3 to 4 coats to insure that it covered well. Can I apply flat paint to a ceiling previously painted with semi-gloss?
You would need to lightly sand it, wipe it down with a moist, not wet, cloth, and let it dry. Then you need to wipe it down with a tac cloth. I personally would put a stain-blocker like Kilns on first. If you do it right, you won't have to do in again. Can I apply flat paint to a ceiling previously painted with semi-gloss?
Use the same type of paint (latex with past latex and oil if oil in past) then use a primer first.
Yes, and since you'll know right away if you missed a spot, and if your like me and dont have an eye for painting, paint is now available that goes on purple and drys white. Available at a Lowes or HD.

  • I just painted a room with a dark blue semi-gloss paint. Question...?

I can still see roller marks everywhere and it has been almost 4 hours since I finished. Will I have to repaint or will it look better tomorrow?I just painted a room with a dark blue semi-gloss paint. Question...?
it will probably look better tomorrow, but make sure you have at least 2 coats on.I just painted a room with a dark blue semi-gloss paint. Question...?
It should improve by tomorrow. If not, add another coat.

It could be your roller, too. My hubby painted our hallways with one of those rollers that feed the paint into it. It left roller marks all over because of the roller itself.

They have different naps on rollers. You might need a thicker nap.
With most paints, you have to put on more than one coat.
I'm sorry to say you will have to repaint! You probably had excessive paint on your roller OR had a tendency to paint only up and down. When rolling paint, especially semi-gloss or gloss, you must be careful to roll in multiple directions and diagonally, while checking the edges of the roller to see that they don't leave edge marks with excessive paint.
Why would you use semi-gloss paint? Nowadays latex eggshell paints are very washable if you buy a decent brand. I would paint the walls with a latex primer and then paint over that with the same colour you used but in a latex eggshell. I never use a roller but use a paint pad that you can buy at Home Depot. They work great and never leave marks. Also I think it is faster and easier to do edging. I just painted my spare bedroom dark purple with latex eggshell using the paint pad and it looks fab. No streaks at all.But if you still want to use the paint you bought then you might need two or maybe three coats.

How do you paint things shiny gloss?

shine like car paint but how?How do you paint things shiny gloss?
I use oil based high gloss paints. First of all I sand the surface using three different sand papers, starting with the most coarse and working my way to the finest. I wipe it clean with methylated spirits because it dries instantly and there is no water to make the timber swell or affect the paint in any way. I apply a good quality undercoat, usually oil based. If you can find a ridge filler undercoat, it will help even out flaws. If you have large pits or dents you might want to fill with an appropriate filler. Leave for a minimum of 12 hours and sand with a fine grade paper. Wipe off with metho again. Feel with your fingers - if you can feel bumps you will be able to see them, so you may need to sand a little more.

For the paint: use the best quality brush you can afford. Ask for advice in the paint store if you are unsure. Load your brush with a small amount of paint. If it's a small item you should be able to do a stroke the full length in one go. If not, you will need to reload mid stroke. Apply the paint, reload and pick up where you left off. When one length is complete, go back and lay off in the opposite direction, that is to brush the paint all in the same direction. Work quickly. When you have completed your first coat, leave to dry for a minimum of 12 hours and repeat the sand and paint process again. I usually do three coats of oil based paint, but you may not need to. If I'm doing a clear finish on a timber project, I will rub boiled linseed oil into the clear finish with a very, very fine steel wool. It gives a lovely soft finish.

There are also two pack products available which can be sprayed on and give a very high gloss finish, but I have never used those. How do you paint things shiny gloss?
Get some high gloss paint or polyurethane.
First you need a paint or finish that is full gloss. Then you need one that is abradable. (Poly is not very abradable).

Applying that finish or paint will get you as glossy as you can get off the gun or off the brush. Normally this is about 85-90 degrees on a scale of 0-100.

Let it cure for several weeks, then polish with progressively finer abrasives like auto rubbing compounds.

Could I use semi gloss white paint as a primer?

I have a gallon of behr semi gloss white paint. I am painting my walls but I need a primer. Can I use that and then paint over with regular paint from behr that I would buy?Could I use semi gloss white paint as a primer?
No. Don't use a semi gloss paint or any other type of paint as a primer. Primer is like a glue. It sticks to your walls and covers up the old paint, but also give your new paint a surface to stick too. Primer also seals off any odors you might have and will allow you to use less paint to paint your walls. If you use the semi gloss paint your other paint will not stick to it. You would have to sand it down to get the glossy finish off.Could I use semi gloss white paint as a primer?
No, you can't. Primer has very different properties than wall paint. It's designed to seal the wall and give the new paint a good surface to adhere to. Semi gloss is one of the hardest paints to cover. The sheen makes paint slide around rather than stay where you apply it. This is why it's recommended that you prime over semi gloss before you paint it. Use the proper material for the job. If you have an Ace hardware store near you, they have Zinsser 1-2-3 primer on sale this weekend. Very good primer, excellent price. Hope this helps.
No - Primer is completely different from paint. I suggest Kilz primer. It has great coverage. Not to mention what you have is a semi gloss, which is shiny - can't use that as a primer.
    YES. of course you can
Sure you can. Save a couple of $ as well.

Can household paint, emulsion or gloss, ever be incorporated into a painting?

I have some lovely colours amongst my left-over household paints which will probably never get used on the walls and doors again so wondered, as I've recently started oil painting, if these could ever be used as part of a picture. Does anyone know? Can household paint, emulsion or gloss, ever be incorporated into a painting?
Of coarse you can incorporate these residential grade paints into your art work. These paints are of lower quaility than ';artist'; or even ';student'; grade colors. If you start with your household paints you would stay with or change to a ';better'; grade paint to finish. Good luck! Can household paint, emulsion or gloss, ever be incorporated into a painting?
Some artists like to use them (e.g. James Burford). If the paints are acrylics, then they cannot go over oil. Oil paints can go on top of them, of course.

I have got a door with 15 panes of glass which has gloss paint on on the glass?

can anyone tell me how i can clean the paint of please i don't want to use a razor blade in case i scratch the glassI have got a door with 15 panes of glass which has gloss paint on on the glass?
This paint is more than likely a latex based paint...spirits,thinners etcetra nail polish remover wont touch it..go buy a quart of denatured alcoho0l at walmart..it will take the latex off..Here is a picture that shows what it looks like

http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=鈥?/a>I have got a door with 15 panes of glass which has gloss paint on on the glass?
    Hi,

    have you tried white spirit?

Get some on a cloth then rub over the paint on the glass,

might take a bit of elbow grease, but it will come off.

I done this with my window panes and it come off.
a stanley knife blade, at a 45% angle and sawing motion scrapes paint of glass
don't use any liquid. If it gets on an y of the other paint, you are doomed to repaint it. Use that razor blade, use a new one that has no chips in it, and hold it about 30 degrees off the glass on one side.
Please I'm a builder, Forget all other ansers, exept stanley knife blade. Do not use solvents! A razor blade will not scratch the glass. Take care!
mick g and mike are correct why people are giving them a thumbs down is beyond me, use a stanley knife blade (preferably in a scraper) you will not scratch the glass, its alot quicker than using chemicals.
try some white spirit on a cloth , rub the paint off and finish the corners with a blade , if you take your time you will not scratch the glass
Go and buy a Razor Scraper, I get this all the time...

Simple to use just dont press too hard..

They do NOT scratch the glass..If you are in the UK, B%26amp;Q sell them, in the painting section under scrapers..
start with something like Goop Off. It may remove it. If not, consult the experts...a painter, or call the local paint store and ask for suggestions. I've attached a link to the Asso. of North America Glass. They have info on what to do. Another good source maybe the local window washing company.

    Good luck!
Nail polish remover should do the trick
    I'm a Painting Contractor.....

mick G is right....just scrape the glazing and change blades often
Best decorator tip coming up - Use a copper coin ie 2p place flat on glass and just slide and bumb into paint . It may take some time but will be scratch free .
Agree with Mick and Mike. I'm no contractor, but I've painted lots of doors and windows in my time. Always used a razor blade to clean the paint off the glass. Never, ever scratched a glass. Next time, consider taping off the glass parts before you begin painting.
Hi hon , listen to the experts they are right - no liquid paint remover , just a sharp clean safety blade , lots of time and patience !!!
YOU can buy a glass cleaning scraper at BQ home base use this to take paint of the glass .. Very easy to use Good luck
    hi

you could try white spirit but if the paints been on there a while it might not shift, i know you can buy a scraping blade tool from the diy shop that has a guard on this might be better than a razor blade and shouldnt scratch the glass.

  • Whats the easiest way to paint over blue gloss woodwork to white?

i've just moved in a new house and the paint work is a dark blue gloss and i want to paint them white,i would like to know the easiest way of doing this.Whats the easiest way to paint over blue gloss woodwork to white?
I can give you the best answer, but it is not so easy. First sand down the gloss so that paint will adhere. It will have a dull finish. Second: Paint over it with a concealing paint similar to KILZ. Third: When dry, paint it with the color of your choice. It may take two coats to completely cover. Be sure to use good quality paint. As an interior designer/decorator this works for me.Whats the easiest way to paint over blue gloss woodwork to white?
sand down the woodwork and then paint over it - cos if you paint over gloss it'll just peel right off.
You don't paint over...you remove the blue paint first, which is easy.

Either rub down with sandpaper, which is hard work, or paint on a stripping agent, which is easy. Best method by far is a blow torch. Mind the curtains though. And that gas pipe...
Use a liquid paint deglosser that you wipe on with a rag. Its safer than sanding if your home is old enough to have lead based paint. Afterwards two coats off good quality paint should be all you need. The only reason you would need primer is if there is paint peeling to bare wood.
First thing to do is to abrade the surface. Once complete, use a tac rag to remove any dust particles, and you are then ready for your paint system.

The first coat should be a high opacity undercoat (formerly c alled obliterating undercoat) This will cover the strong colours you have at present.

Once dry (normally 24 hrs) you are able to apply the white gloss paint.
lightly rub it down with fine sandpaper then apply the white gloss. You will need at least 2 coats allowing each coat to dry properly before applying the next.
a good undercoat will cover the blue and then you can apply the white gloss
put a good primer on it and then paint it white.
Use a heat gun to remove the blue gloss. Sand. Prime. Use white gloss. You'll get a great finish that will last for years.
    White Gloss will cover it

My house was dark purple glossed when I moved in %26amp; the white covered it well.
white undercoat and then white gloss
Give it a little sand down and use a damp cloth to clean wood , then use an undercoat then your gloss that way it will give it a good look..
You could just paint white gloss over it which would cover it up. The only problem is that if you ever chip it the old colour would show through and look really obvious.

The best thing to do is either use paint stripper (use proper PPE ie gloves as paintstripper is harmful and will damage your skin). Or you could sand the old colour off.

If it is just skirting board the easiest thing in truth is just to rip it off and start fresh! It may seem daunting but much better than spending ages getting the old paint off.
Several methods will work- you'll have to mix and match a little for the best results:

    1. Multiple coats. Use a good primer as the first coat for better adhesion and coverage.

    2. Degloss the gloss with sandpaper, steel wool, liquid deglosser, etc.

    3. Use a good, thick, expensive paint to cover better- expensive paints have more pigment, so offer better coverage.

    4. Experiment with a paint pad or small trim roller instead of a brush, I find that brushes don't work as well on gloss bases.
I did the same t hing when I moved.. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that you use a KILZ primer on the paint(existing woodwork) first.. an absolutely MUST....let dry of course.. then you can start your white painting.. very simple but PRIMER is a MUST
Two coats of a good quality white gloss should do it. To give it added 'take', sandpaper the existing paintwork lightly before you start to repaint.
Strip it right down use a good paint stripper. sand down. then use a wood primer. then use a good gloss paint. If you just put a couple of coats of gloss over it would cover but without preparing

and stripping it ,the least knocks would show through the old paint. I KNOW IVE DONE IT.
Just use an undercoat then re gloss in white!
Good rub down, with 40/60 grit paper.

2 good coats of undercoat, maybe 3 if still blueish.

    gloss.

Light rubdown between coats, 120 grit paper.

    Job done....

just read some of the other answers.

Do not paint gloss over gloss. Gloss is more shine less white.

You need to use sandpaper, to key the previous paint so as the new coat has something to grab to.

Chemical strippers are usually, acid based, If you use these, FOLLOW the safety instructions.

Heat guns and burners. They burn paint off. Keep water close by. the timber is old, and dry. If you see too much smoke, dampen slightly. Stay with skirting for at least 1 hour after, to make sure none is smouldering.
well rub down with a rough sandpaper or disc and fine one after ! then 2 coats of light u/c and 2 coats of white gloss!!! if you want a slap over just i coat of each but thick as it comes out the tin
Easiest way is of coarse to get someone else to do it for you.

If however your doing it yourself, a good sanding with a medium good quality sandpaper, clean off the dust remember the better the preparation the better the job.then a coat of white undercoat and allow the right amount of time to dry, as per instructions on the paint tin then a coat of good paint whether you are doing it gloss or silk or even matt..If doing a relay large area I would use a fine roller first giving it good rub with something to take the loose fibres of first or you will get a hairy wall, from experience I did seven doors in my hall only to find yes they were hairy, different but not nice I did them again after cleaning the roller properly. To save having an orange peal effect I go over the paint with a large fine brush(as I am working) very lightly brushing one way.try and fish one whole wall before stopping for a rest or you will find the joint where you stopped and started will stick out like a sore thumb

What can I do to stop the smell of gloss paint when painting?

Add a few drops of vanilla extract to the paint. Works better than anything else I've found. Happy Painting! What can I do to stop the smell of gloss paint when painting?
half a lemon helps ot buy ocour free gloss, it is a bit more expensive but well worth it.What can I do to stop the smell of gloss paint when painting?
get the other half to do it and you go out shopping for the day or do somthing nice i would ,
put a peg on your nose
You cannot stop the smel however your should be painting in a WELL Ventalated area, keep your windows open use a fan or two to blow the air out of the room.
Use a fan that is blowing past your face. It will blow the fumes away from you and keep the area ventilated, which all paints say it should be anyhow. Works when I make my models ...
    Don't use gloss, it's so 70's!
use a fan and blow it so the vapors go outside, and you can wear mask if thwe smell bothers you, i would use pastel paints no smell and for that jerk that answered first i don't think your questions stupid at all!
get the low odour paint, and leave the windows open till it's fully dry.
Get a big bowl of really hot water and sling loads of lemon/citrus juice in it (or citrussy disifectant) this'll act like a gentel perfumed steam and the water itself will absorb a lot of the fumes.
Start a small fire in the middle of the room and leave to burn for a couple of hours.

Hey presto! No more paint odour.
Place lemons on saucers in the room you are painting it takes away the smell, it does work!
My dad told me to peel and cut a white onion in half leave it in a bowl in the room you are decorating. I found it worked.

Failing that the new 3 room freshener things are really good.
Place cut onions in the room and open the windows.

That or buy some non fume gloss :-)
    buy the odour free stuff
don't decorate yourself, get a painter in to do it and go on holiday while he's painting.

if this is not an option, use low odour paint from b+q

Does anyone know how to remove gloss paint from a leather jacket?

Once its dried on you will have a hell of a time getting it off without ruining the leather. Pick it off is all you can try. Any chemical you use has a good chance of damaging your jacket.Does anyone know how to remove gloss paint from a leather jacket?
gloss doesn't come out but on leather you could try peeling it of with your nails or something sharp or try vanish and a cloth hope this helpsDoes anyone know how to remove gloss paint from a leather jacket?
Dear, carefully use a non-acetone, nail polish remover, as th paint starts to lighten use a lint free cloth to blot the paint out. Use a good leather moisturizer to put the oils back into the leather. Good luck Annmarie

How to you get a really good hi gloss mirror paint job from a spray can? is that possible?

all paint jobs are the same.. Prep work is the key

now if your trying to paint a large item with a spray can you will get 'tiger stripes' in the paint cause the spray pattern of the can is to norrow and you cant get a good enough overlap before paint starts to flash...

But sand with 80 grit, then again with 120, wash with grease and wax remover, prime

Then sand primer with 220 then 320 paper

Blow/wipe clean.. Then paint.. More amount of lighter coats is better than fewer number of heavy coats. Let paint flash between coats

Then go back once full dried in a couple of days and 'color sand' the paint. Using alot of water and wet/dry type of sand paper in 1000 grit sand painted surface, then step up to 1200 grit, then 1400 grit paper

Keep washing off the part and keep it and paper wet.

Then once thats done, go back with a buffer and wool pad and rubbing compound and buff it out, then use a polishing compund and foam pad to finish up

You will end up with a very deep, high gloss finish like you see on show carsHow to you get a really good hi gloss mirror paint job from a spray can? is that possible?
a lot of coats and a lot of wet sanding.

The coving in my house has been painted with gloss paint and looks crap.?

Will I need to sand it before I emulsion it?The coving in my house has been painted with gloss paint and looks crap.?
Yes, you will need to sand it with a P120 grit abrasive paper first or the paint will slip around when you apply it and will not get a good grip onto the surface,. You're not vigorously rubbing down, just providing a key over the entire area.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to apply a coat of undercoat (for wood) first and then emulsion that. The coving in my house has been painted with gloss paint and looks crap.?
You might get away with a couple of coats of white matt emulsion to give you a base to start again.

It is a massive job to try to sand it down.

Matt emulsion will give you a similar base to undercoat and will be easier. I did it with one room where it had been done and it worked.

Use a small gloss roller to give it a good finish as well.
lightly sand with a fine paper just to key it!

i would advice using a vinyl matt not normal matt as this will crack and peel with time

i would use a primer first for good measure but that is a bit overkill for just a diy job
Looking at your answers..everyone seems to have missed using liquid sand (B%26amp;Q) works very well to provide a key for application of as many coats of emulsion paint as required..does exactly what it says on the tin
You will certainly need to make a 'key' for emulsion to stick. gently though - coving is only foam unless its the real thing.
Paint over it with satin paint. Not satin emulsion but the satin paint you can get for doors / skirting boards etc.

Can I mix flat exterior paint with semi gloss interior?

I have a spare bedroom I want to paint, and don't really feel like spending money to do so, and have enough of these two paints where I could mix them and take care of it. Will they mix together, and would the finish be somewhere eggshell like then? Whats the difference between exterior and interior paint anyway? Can I mix flat exterior paint with semi gloss interior?
There is not a whole lot of difference except that exterior needs to be able withstand weather conditions ie; expanding and contracting with heat and cold. You can mix them together you will get a ';satin'; finish assuming they are both latex. Can I mix flat exterior paint with semi gloss interior?
If they are both latex YES

    or

    both oil based YES

    or

    both vinyl paint YES

BUT do NOT mix different kinds of paints

for example oil and latex or vinyl and latex etc...

Exterior paint usually contain more water resistance chemically speaking to help prevent chipping and cracking.

As for the COLOUR good luck they may or may not give the desired colour.

My suggestion is try a few drops of each in an old film canister or like container you can throw away after. Then make a paint swatch on paper let dry and see the results FIRST.
No. These people are wrong. Talk to a paint store worker, not just a clerk at Menards.

Exterior Paints and finishes have extra chemicals added to withstand moisture and sunlight, and these paints give off fumes even after it's dry. It wouldn't kill you, but it would probably make you sick feeling and give you strong headaches.
As long as they have the same base ( latex, oil or vinyl) there is no problem mixing for interior. Don't mix interior to use outdoors.

If the colors are the same you should be ok. Otherwise you might get a different hue
Yep -you'll get satin. Mix satin with flat %26amp; you get eggshell. ;o) As for interior vs. exterior I don't know the difference. Good question!

Why won't the high gloss red paint cover white patches or paint smoothly?

This red is lighter than the origianl red that the kitchen was painted. I do not know what type of finish was on that paint. We bought our paint at Duron (Sherwin Williams). We put two coats on, then primed the entire wall and put two more coats over top (5 coats total). The paint does not look smooth (you can see brush strokes) and has not covered white spots well (patches where nails used to be). Any help on what we can try or what is going wrong? Why won't the high gloss red paint cover white patches or paint smoothly?
The white patches, are they putty or plaster? Were they primmed aswell. Drywall, plaster, putty and other porous surfaces like to suck up the primmer and paint so it is importaint to make sure they have suficient coats of primmer on them.

The brush strokes could be on the paint underneath and are more apparent because of the color you have choosen. it creates more shadows on the lines. What is also important is the drying times and curing times inbetween coats and primer and paint.

I am also wondering if the primer use was tinted? It should have been. If you used a different color or shade of primer than the kitchen you wont turn out with the same shade of red. Also note that if proper sanding was not done after the holes were plug or patched this will show through. I hope that this info helps. What you might have to do is see if there is a really think primmer that can be used to coat the entire surface and that can be sanded smooth where needed. Thus getting rid of lines and patches. Then reprime with a tinted primer and then repaint.

Hope all works out well! Good luck! Why won't the high gloss red paint cover white patches or paint smoothly?
too many layers for one thing. an by the sound of it you put it on too thick or you would have never seen the strokes.

as soon as you found that the paint did not match you should have primed it then. with probably only one coat.

then after dry for 24 hours, 48 if the paint was a gloss, you could have applied your first coat and then after 48 hours your second.
I love red! I painted one wall in my kitchen red and then stopped! I've since heard that red is the worst color to paint with. You need several coats of dark primer, like gray or tinted, and when you paint you still need several coats of the red. All I can suggest is to go over one more time with a roller and see how it turns out.
High gloss paint is always problematic. Why not scale back to a low gloss?
Red is a difficult color to work with. First thing I recommend is to use a roller wherever you can instead of a brush. There are different thicknesses of rollers. The rougher the surface is, the thicker the roller padding should be. You may have to paint two to three times over white so that the white doesn't show through. And red tends to fade over time more than about any color. So you can paint the room, they you use touch up a year or two later and guess what? It doesn't match. And brush strokes normally are a result of brushing the paint too much, especially if the paint is starting to dry. You want a good amount of paint on your brush when you paint with a brush then spread it out so it doesn't run. I only use a brush for the 2-3'; that are right next to what I've taped off for trim painting.

Also, as you paint more layers. You will see imperfections more and more because each layer makes the imperfection slightly bigger. And with high gloss, the gloss will tend to want to show the imperfections very easily when the light hits it. I tend to prefer a satin paint finish. The reason why is that it doesn't give so much gloss that it shines and shows the roughness in the wall real bad when the light hits it. But at the same time, it has enough shine so that when you do have to do a touch-up on the wall, you can't tell where you did the touch up. If you do a touch up with flat paint, the touch up normally can be easily seen.

So far my favorite paint has been American Signature at Lowe's, it's also called Valspar I think. Behr paint at Home Depot is pretty good. And Pittsburgh paint at Menards isn't too bad.

I normally never have to put on more than two coats of paint, normally not even with red. Three coats absolute max. If it takes more than that, you have crappy paint or you are doing something wrong.

If you are talking about covering some of the little pen head size divots, the best way I've found to cover them up is to press the roller a little harder in that area to squeeze out a little more paint out of the roller and try getting that paint to kind of roll into and fill up that divot. Or you can get a paintbrush use the paintbrush to get the paint into the divot, then go back over the area right away with a roller to get rid of the paintbrush marks.
Ok, first of all, red is by far the HARDEST color to paint and get it looking right. Gray primer is the only way to go because painting red over white is next to impossible. So I would start over, buy some gray primer or get them to tint your primer if you still have some. Then, ROLL your paint. DON'T brush it. If you have to cut in around trim etc. then use a good brush and put it on kind of heavy but watch for drips. And ALWAYS with red especially roll into a wet edge. Meaning, cut in around doors and window etc and roll into the wet edge. Don't let anything dry that needs to be painted. When you let it dry, and then paint into the edge it will leave dark spots or light spots. I hope I helped! Good luck!
Brush strokes are caused by painting that spot too much. Apply paint generously, smooth it out with 5 or less strokes, let it dry. Don't brush or roll drying paint after it's been applied for more than 3 to 5 minutes. If you see somewhere you need to smooth out, very light brush it, barely touching the paint....

Can i put gloss paint directly over semi-gloss paint?

i am painting a door. i painted it in semi gloss paint but think i would like it in gloss.the paint is very similar in colour to the wall paint which is semi-gloss but i thought the contrast in texture would be better and it would be a lot less work than priming it first. Can i put gloss paint directly over semi-gloss paint?
Double check the instructions on the can, but I would imagine it would be ok to do. If you were going flat over semi-gloss or hi-gloss, I'd recommend roughing the surface first with fine sandpaper (and maybe you might still want to do this...).Can i put gloss paint directly over semi-gloss paint?
use 220 grit and sand off the gloss. Doors look better in a gloss enamel. There are water base enamels now.
Yes ! Make sure the semi-gloss is clean. Semi-gloss is perfect as an undercoat or primer.
yes. Just slightly rub it down and make sure it is clean. Use white spirit
No,it will peel, you have to Slightly sand it down so it will stick with the door and not peel of.
Applying a coat of paint over another coat (regardless of colors) without priming the old paint is a recipe for disaster. Especially with a gloss undercoat, there is nothing for the new paint to adhere to. Assuming the paint goes on evenly without separating from the gloss layer (bare gaps or landslide-looking drips), it will be very susceptible to peeling once it's dry. And, if it does peel, you'll probably be able to pull strips of paint off like a banana peel.

To prevent this from happening, you should sand the original paint to give the primer a surface to adhere to. Then prime the door, let it dry (at least a couple of hours, more in humid conditions), and then paint with the semigloss.

The extra work will be worth the outcome. Cutting corners will just cause you extra work later, when you have to strip off the semigloss paint and do it all over again.

Can I paint over semi gloss paint with satin without priming it?

Yes you can. You need to be sure the surface is free of oil, wax, dirt and loose paint. Can I paint over semi gloss paint with satin without priming it?
Maybe! The thing you need to remember is this...if the semi gloss paint is an oil base paint you will need to use oil base paint in a satin too. BUT if the semi gloss is a latex base paint then you can use another latex type over it. PLUS, if you want to use latex over oil you MUST prime it first or the paint will peel right off. Hope this helps. Can I paint over semi gloss paint with satin without priming it?
Definitely yes. As with any enamel(paint with a sheen)you need to scuff with fine sandpaper, wipe down to get residue off. I make sure of good adhesion by sanding then using a liquid sandpaper (they are great). You do not really need to sand, just scuff the surface. You could use tsp if your walls are dirty or grimy- make sure it is non rinsable or you will have to rinse.
yes you can. You might want to take a fine sand paper and go over the walls. then wipe it down to make sure there is no paint dust. This will help the satin adhere better.
I wouldn't it will take a few coats and not neccessarily adhere well

Is that one coat gloss paint any good?

Or is it better to use undercoat and normal gloss? Is that one coat gloss paint any good?
Yes Dean you should be ok. As long as the color your going over is not to dark and your painting with a light color. But you should sand whatever you are painting. You only need to rough it up a little then wipe the dust off.Is that one coat gloss paint any good?
Ok, it'd be ok to use the one coat gloss, but if you'd like it's ok to do undercoat and normal gloss too. Just with one coat it's less you have to do and less build-up of layers of paint.

Oh, and it'd be a lot cheaper. Lol.

you can try a high gloss spray paint, over a primer so it will stick, but honestly the bast finish will be obtained from a body shop with a good gloss paint and a sprayer. the asians made hi gloss lacquer by tediously sanding between each coats to build up that high gloss finish, I happen to paint furniture for a living for 5 years now www.vontagechicfurniture.com

What type of paint should I use? Should I sand the walls or primer first? What types of sealer can I use to make it permanent. Do you know of any website that can give me ideas?Thank you so much!I have semi-gloss paint on my walls and I want to paint a mural. Prep ideas? Paint/Sealer suggestions? Thanks?
A product called ';TSP'; (trisodium phosphate) sold in paint depts., hardware stores, building supply and many large box stores. It is ideal for cleaning and dulling the surface to paint over. It is available in boxes and tubs from 1 pound up to 10 or more.

Painters use this regularly for preparation of surfaces and it is a lot easier than sanding plus not nearly as messy. It can be used on any painted surface, walls, woodwork and trim.

The MOST important thing to remember is BE SURE to rinse (wipe down with clean water rags, mop, squeegee) to remove residue. Avoid getting on glass/mirrors-be sure to clean off.

It essentially un-glosses the surface, removes grease from cooking, smoke, stains, room sprays and allows the new paint to adhere to the surface. I've even used it to un-slick wall paneling/wood trims and painted over with ease.

TIP: A great laundry aide-it will remove grease and oil, smoke, many stains on washable fabrics. Use as a powder and a stiff brush dipped in water for the tuff guys first like paint on clothing, grass stains.

Once your mural is COMPLETELY dried-spray over with 100% clear acrylic which comes in matte(no gloss), satin(low gloss) or a high gloss finish. This will protect it, keep it cleaner and allow you to wash it without damage.

Can I use white semi gloss paint on moulding across the ceiling if the ceiling is flat white?

Yes! It creates a nice sheen in contrast to the matte ceiling and walls. I have it at my house, and it looks very classy. All wood trim should be in semi-gloss.Can I use white semi gloss paint on moulding across the ceiling if the ceiling is flat white?
You can but there will be a sharp contrast between the flat and the semi-gloss. It might look good as long as you keep the paint on just the moulding. Can I use white semi gloss paint on moulding across the ceiling if the ceiling is flat white?
I read this out loud to my handyman hubby and he said, ';NO! Tell him to stain and varnish it. It'll look a lot better!'; So I had to tell you...but I use whatever sheens I want in a room and never have had bad results. I am a big fan of semi-gloss simply because it looks better and easily washes! Have fun!
Ya try a small spot on both areas let dry see how it looks.
yes, it is no different than the moulding around your windows, door and your base trim which are all probibly semi gloss.
that is the ';Correct'; way to paint trim
I usually go by one rule for a good contrast to walls and trim....ceilings-flat............. walls- semi gloss....and trim-gloss makes for a good look and easy to clen when dirty.
Yes, this will make your molding stand out from the ceiling even more give it a nice finished look.

Can anyone tell me how to get semi-gloss paint out of berber carpet with out ruining the carpet.?

Steam cleaner. Moist heat softens it enough for the bristles of the machine to clean it out. On small spots have used a tack cloth and a steam iron - is a precarious operation and if not careful can make it worse. Can anyone tell me how to get semi-gloss paint out of berber carpet with out ruining the carpet.?

    White gloss paint on carpet?

Does anybody know how to remove the drips of gloss paint on our green hall carpet? If we use turps, will it remove the paint without damaging the carpet?White gloss paint on carpet?
Start with the simplest, easiest method; mild detergent and water. Many carpets are made from synthetic material and will not appreciate any solvents.

Check the paint container for advice and information, maybe even give the manufacturer an email.

Also, try to determine what type of carpet you have. If you were the one who put it down, you should have an idea of what fabric it is made of. This will go a long way in solving this problem.

If none of this leads anywhere, like I said, start small and easy and work from there. After the liquid detergent, I might try some of that white gelatin-like hand cleaner. I would not jump right into using heavy solvents.

No matter what you try, always begin in an inconspicuous spot; behind a door, in a corner, in a closet.

Remember, no matter what you try, try not to get the carpet soaked. If there is padding, anything too strong is going to disintegrate it, and it will take a VERY long time before you get rid of the odor once it soaks through.White gloss paint on carpet?
try a tsp of detergent and some warm water and blot the paint, don't rub too hard....

if you are going to use any spirits to try to remove it, use only water soluable stuff and try in a spot that is not in the middle of the floor....
Turps will remove your paint from your carpet. Dilute it first.
Use clean cloth dipped in white spirit, then use carpet or upholstery shampoo
go to sherwin williams paint store and get some goof-off it works really great to get paint off anything
belive it or not - baby oil works!! my bf spilt half a tin of gloss on my new carpet the once .....we had ran out of turps .....so we got it up with baby oil!!! u shud really do it straight away ...but have a go?!!

  • Can I tile ontop of my old gloss paint covered tiles in the bathroom?

Sure. Just chip away at the corners of existing tiles, breaking them and taking out about a 2'; square, then screed with a layer of special cement that provides waterproofing as well as a rough enough surface which your final bonding cement can grip to (i forgot the name of the product and couldn't find it in a search, but most hardware stores have it if you describe it to them).

    Lastly, tile as per normal.

PS. Check for door clearance heights. You might have to shorten your door a bit.Can I tile ontop of my old gloss paint covered tiles in the bathroom?
I think you should never tile on top old tiles. You are better remove the old one and tile the new one.

Removing wallpaper with gloss paint on top!?

Hello all! me and my mum just moved into a new house but the person before us had wallpaper in the bathroom and painted it over with gloss paint!

how would we removed this?Removing wallpaper with gloss paint on top!?
With a lot of elbow grease. I helped a friend do their flat, the kitchen had black glossed wallpaper which was a nightmare to remove, we basically turned the kitchen into a sauna with pots of water boiling for ages, we had previously scored all the paper to allow moisture thru. I think your best bet is to either buy or hire a steam wall paper stripper and leave it steaming for a while in there then use it as you should. It will still take a fair bit of work if my mates kitchen is anything to bo by.

Good luckRemoving wallpaper with gloss paint on top!?
It really depends on what you want to accomplish in the end. If you are going to hang new paper, then yes, you will most likely have to do some steaming. I would suggest deglossing the current paint so that you can open up the surface (pores) so the paint can accept the steam and I only know of 2 ways to that: 1-Use Lacquer retarder. It's very volatile but it will work. Read the directions carefully and wear heavy duty gloves. 2-Use a liquid sand paper, much less volatile but still no walk in the park. Fairly safe though. Both these products will cut the sheen on the paint. Without that step, unless the paper is already peeling, you are pretty much out of luck.

If you want to just repaint or texture and the seams in the paper are glued down tight enough, you can simply use a high adhesion primer and go over the top of it with joint compound and create the texture you want, then prime again and paint it. We have done it many times in our business but only when there's tight adhesion on the existing paper.
Your gloss paint is waterproof and no amount of soaking or filling baths up with hot water will make any difference.

If you go to a proper decorators merchants you might get a dry stripper which amounts to a 4 inch stanley blade on a handle, another is two similar blades in a chevron. They cut the paper and slide under. Hard work, but the fastest.

If you rent a good steamer it 'might' soften the paper so you can get under it, but you'll be there all day doing it.
You could try a steamer which you should be able to hire, but I doubt that it will be easy. Other than that I would use a flat scraper to very carefully scrape away the paint %26amp; top layer of paper a bit at a time (don't be too enthusiastic!) Once that is removed wet the remainder (you can get stripping liquid but I prefer detergent and water) and it should come away quite easily.

Good Luck! I don't envy you that task.
get a big hand brush, a bucket of hot soapy water, a filling knife and a scraper

soak the wall with the water using the brush and try to get as much of the bubbles on, leave for 5-10 mins then soak again, try and see if the paper will come off if not keep soaking

steamers are more trouble than they are worth
score the paper first using a wire brush and elbow grease, then soak with warm water and leave for 20min. then soak again and try removing with a paint scraper. more scoring and soaking may be required but will work.
cant argue with taf on this one.the scraper he is talking about is sometimes called a bealine scraper.

    24 years as a decorator.
a steamer would help. But as in bathroom fill bath with boiling water close the door and after 15 mins replace water close door and scrape away, should be very easy
I would try fabric softener and water. But it in a spray bottle and spray some on the peel it off. It works amazingly!
if you can't get a steamer, try spraying it with hot water and letting it set for a while, but not untill its dry

Can you paint the ceiling with gloss paint?

Yes but why would you want to?Can you paint the ceiling with gloss paint?
Well yes you could paint it with gloss paint but it is cheaper and easier to use emulsion. Can you paint the ceiling with gloss paint?
Gloss paint won't look as bright as matt or silk, because it doesn't diffuse the light in all directions. It may look quite grey (but shiny).
    Emulsion yes.
Yes you can, go to this page for which paint to use.

    http://paintingyourhouse.info/choosing%2鈥?/a>
No fear mate, when i look up everything gets to look funny and I could fall over, just like looking over the edge of a cliff at heights. Anyway who wants paint in their eyes?
You can paint ceilings with gloss but you will need to be sure you have excellent ventilation as the surface painted with gloss is sealed and will not breath as emulsions do this can cause moulds to form and all sorts of difficulties later on.
No, you use emulsion on ceilings. Gloss is oil based and it will be harder to repaint over gloss with emulsion next time you need to paint it. Try a silk emulsion if you want a ';sheen'; to your ceiling.
Certainly. And it is a very good idea for the ceilings in bathrooms and kitchens because that makes them easier to clean.

    Bert
Yes, and it will be much easier to clean when the time comes than flat paint.
Depends on the composition of the ceiling. Many are plasterboard, which won't cover well with gloss paint, being very absorbent.
You can, but why? Unless you are working in an industrial kitchen and you want to hard wash the ceiling every few months?

The intended purpose of gloss is a hard finish coat for wood and metal able to withstand the elements and other punishment. Gloss will be much harder to apply and get a good finish on a ceiling than emulsion. If you want an easy paint that can be wiped on a ceiling try Dulux quick-drying eggshell. If you have no special reason for a hard wearing paint, a ceiling is the ideal place to put cheaper standard emulsion as it takes no punishement.
you can use what paint you like, most people use emulsion vynyl silk looks neat

How do I paint brown gloss satin over white gloss?

I been asking this question to a number of people. I am going to paint some cupboards. that have already been painted in white gloss by a previous owner. It is white gloss and I am going to paint it in an brown gloss satin. Do I have to undercoat it and prime it. Because to be honest I do not know what undercoat is exactly and do I have to sand it. what paint brush to use etc. Is it important to clean them with sugar soap. How do I paint brown gloss satin over white gloss?
Simple. Just get the oil based undercoat mixed in the same colour as the top coat. I would have thought most in the trade does it that way. Everyone that I know do.How do I paint brown gloss satin over white gloss?
I've been a painter for twenty plus years. I have several suggestions:

    1. Use Sherwin William's Prep Rite Bonding primer as the first coat (tinted as much as possible towards your final color). This primer bonds better than any I have used over a glossy surface without the need for sanding or scuffing.

    or

lightly sand the surface, use a gloss remover or liquid sander to remove the gloss and wipe clean the dust.

    2. As much as I prefer Sherwin Williams for all of my products I have found that Benjamin Moore now has a very superior paint that covers in one to two coats at the most when changing interior colors drastically. The product is called ';Aura';. Just google Benjamin Moore and look for Aura. I used the Aura in Red at several local Dairy Queens and I covered over glossy white with one coat of the Red.

A final thought. As you are painting cupboards, I would highly recommend using the preprite bonding primer from Sherwin Williams and topping it off with the Aura paint from Benjamin Moore. Use a very soft brush 2 and 1/2 inch Purdy brand and a 1/8 inch nap roller cover. Apply the primer and paint with smooth strokes and do not over work it. When cleaning the brush and roller cover use warm soapy water. I haven't heard of the sugar trick before. Just warm soapy water. any questions you can email me at prestonle

    Yahoo.
Primer is for bare surfaces. There are some specialist primers for unstable or problem surfaces. You do not need primer, but go straight onto undercoat.

Undercoat is like putting a rubber matt between the old hard gloss surface and the new hard gloss or satin finsih you intend to apply. Without it, the hard coats don't really bond and they slip. Undercoat on interiors is softer and acts as a cushion for knocks. When you choose your brown gloss there may be a specified colour undercoat as directed by the manufacturer. If not, I would suggest a dark yellow, but I'm guessing because I can't remember the last time I used brown gloss. One or two coats, not too thick, learn to use a 4inch foam roller and a brush on your cupboards.

There is no gloss satin, as in your question. You will have to choose gloss or satin. Gloss will usually need one coat, Satin two (with one undercoat).

The paint I would buy would be Dulux paint (for wood), oil-based rather than water based and I'd use Dulux Satinwood for a finish. There is no need to rub down between coats except to denib with a little P180 grit paper.

    Good luck.
You need to sandpaper all of the woodwork down, then give it one coat of undercoat and two coats of brown gloss/satin.

The rubbing down with the sandpaper and the undercoat gives a ';key'; and a matt body to the woodwork.

This gives a perfect surface to the wood to accept two coats of brown gloss/satin.

A 1'; and a 2'; brush should be sufficient which you would clean with white spirits.
I would rough the surface up with a mild grit sandpaper, just to get the gloss off. I would then prime the cabinet with a good primer like kilz. After that paint with a good quality paint, I recommend Behr.
get some liquid sand paper it well help get the suface ready. light sand with 220 /340 grit paper.

What do I use to add color to white semi gloss latex paint?

I have an abundance (20 gallons) of white semi gloss latex paint and would like to use it to paint in my home, however I really don't want white, I was wondering if there was a product that I could purchase to add to the paint. Maybe a colorizer of some sort. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! What do I use to add color to white semi gloss latex paint?
My husband is a proffessional painter and I asked him for you.

He said to take it where you bought it and have them mix it. If that is not an option, he said to go buy the color of paint you are wanting and mix it yourself, but he said to stress to you that it must be latex paint if you are mixing it (latex with latex, oil with oil, water with water, etc). Happy painting! What do I use to add color to white semi gloss latex paint?
food dye and lemon juice. the acidity in the lemon juice will offset the extreme color to help make a nice balance.
Yes, there are color dyes available at your paint store. But in order to maintain a constancy in shade, you'll want to mix the whole batch at the same time in the one container.
The paint you have is probably not a base paint that is made for coloring? I do not know how regular white paint would take the colorants. You could talk to a local hardware or paint store to see if they would sell you some colorants that are used to tint paint.
Any good paint store will sell dye additives to color your paint... and they'll even mix it for you. Make certain that you color the correct amount of gallons that you'll need to paint whatever it is you want to paint because if you have to go back and the second batch of dye you buy isn't from the same lot as the first, you may not get the same color. One gallon of paint will cover approximately 400 square feet.

  • How do I get gloss paint to dry quick ?

You can try fans with an open window, but remember you are not drying the inside of the paint. It will take awhile for it to cure. So be careful even if the paint is dry to the touch. How do I get gloss paint to dry quick ?
Depends on the type of paint. Most paints cure in two phases:

    1. Flash off. The dilutent(s) evaporates away.

    2. Curing. Oil based paints absorb oxygen and cure by chemical reaction. Water-based paints evaporate away the co-solvent and coalesce. Lacquers may have some chemical reaction, but primarily cure by evaporation of solvent.

But in all cases, moving fresh air and increasing the temperature will accelerate all the above. How do I get gloss paint to dry quick ?

Depending on how serious you are and what your budget is, there are many options available to make your furniture look professionally smooth and shiny. I would work really hard at sanding and smoothing. Rent or buy a power sander and work from rough sandpaper to super fine. Then use a power buffer, prime, and paint with glossy paint. There are many various types of polyurethane overcoats that won't look yellow. This site may give you some other ideas:

Can you use a paint roller with gloss paint?

yes,use a small spongeroller..you will be amazed how easily and well you will cover a door for instance, just make sure you have a well prepared surface with a good undercoat and enjoy painting. Can you use a paint roller with gloss paint?
Yes, I always use a small sponge roller for gloss or satin paint. I quite like the stippled effect it gives you - much nicer than brush streaks anyway. It's no more difficult to clean than a paintbrush. I painted my melamine kitchen units like this a few years ago and the result was very professional. Can you use a paint roller with gloss paint?
    Yes,a gloss roller. Smooth one.
yes but it will look like cack.

if you must then buy a quality roller such as wooster and add owatrol to help reduce drag (not from diy sheds but decent decrator merchants)

i would suggest using anza paint pads- difficult to find though- try Ray Mun in fulham- he imports them in bulk for me

    http://www.raymunn.com/
Yes, just take care as it is runnier and can splash.
Ive used the small foam rollers with gloss, works fine. I dont think the furry type of roller would work as these are meant for emulson
    yes
I tried this the other week and the roller just slid, so ended up getting out the good old fashioned paint brush
Yes but the chances of getting it out of the roller to re-use it are slim i beleive!
Yes you need to use a mohair or the finest, smoothest, shortest nap roller you can find. A little experimenting with technique wouldn't hurt either. Often with glossy paint you want to only run the roller or brush in one direction. Not using the back and forth movement that is normally used. Good luck!
i agree re owatrol- some people still use white spirit- this just thins the paint and speeds up drying ewhereas owatrol extends the working window and reduces brush marks
A good gloss yes a cheap on don't even bother trying. It wont work
Yes you can,but it must be a short pile mohair roller or the sponge type. And don't forget to lay it off with a brush or you will get an orange peel effect
Yes. Use a roller with a very fine nap.
Yes , but it usually needs running out with a brush afterwards !!
i have seen it done with a small roller ...two inches ..b ut i wouldn't try it any bigger ..and the cost of cleaning the roller!
    You can
Sure, you can but be careful that you don't make too much of a mess that has to be cleaned with mineral spirits.

  • Will a white gloss paint stain on my jacket be removed if i dye the jacket to a darker color?

I got a white gloss paint stain on my jacket and tried to wash it out and the stain became a little faded but there is still a white dis-coloring from where the gloss paint stained the jacket in the first place.

does anyone know if I can remove the white dis-coloring by dying the jacket to a dark color? by the way the jacket is a green army colorWill a white gloss paint stain on my jacket be removed if i dye the jacket to a darker color?
NO hon, dying won't do it. It'll just still look like a spot. Have you tried freezing the jacket and then use a credit card to scrape off the rest? Don't know if that'll work, but, worth a try. Maybe an acetone nail polish remover applied with a rag would get it too. But dying will only still enhance the spot, Been there, tried that.

Do I have to sand the woodwork before painting with the same high gloss paint that is onthe woodwork now?

Very simply put, yes. It will allow the new paint to adhere much better. Take your time and you will love the new finish.Do I have to sand the woodwork before painting with the same high gloss paint that is onthe woodwork now?
Wipe it down with 'paso'; if you don't want to sand it. Do not paint over it without proper sanding or deglossing. The paint will peel quickly.Do I have to sand the woodwork before painting with the same high gloss paint that is onthe woodwork now?
It depends. If the current coat of paint is in good shape and there is no peeling, then you can paint right over it. 2 coats might help. You can always sand it lightly with some 220g sandpaper just to rough up the finish and help the new paint stick better. Even better would be to primer coat it and then paint.
You can use a simple wiping solution, TSP. Tri Sodium Phosphate, it is a salt based solution that when dry, forms small crystals on the surface of the existing paint. This allows the new coat to adhere without a problem.

You can purchase it at most Home stores in powder, liquid and handy wipes for under $20 dollars. Be sure to wear gloves as it will occasionally cause irritation of your hands.
A lot of variables--- Did the wood get dirty? Do you smoke? How old is the paint? Sanding is best but sure is a pain. Sometimes you can just wash the woodwork with a strong soap. Ask at a paint store, you don't have to buy from them to ask.
a quick rub over with steel wool or a hard scourer should do .. you need to give a slightly rough surface to give proper adherence ..failing which use sugar soap (and wear glasses and gloves to use it )
No, just paint over it, unless you have something wrong with the woodwork.
I would recommend to wash it with a fairly strong solution of TSP to cut the gloss. Rinse and paint. Be careful...If the original finish is Oil Based, and you paint it with latex, it may eventually lift the oil base and cause peeling +crazing. (It happened to me!). If this is the scenario, you shouls put a primer between the old finish and new.

Help my gloss paint wont dry. What shall I do?

I painted some shelves that were ready to paint from the shop. I used gloss paint that said do not stir. There was some dark liquid on top of the paint so I did not stir. Now paint is still tacky more than a day later. Do I have to strip it off or can I paint over it - with a different can of paint.Help my gloss paint wont dry. What shall I do?
Paint that says do not stir is thixotropic or non drip. If you stir it , then it goes liquid and may run and drip. The best way to deal with this is to stir in the liquid and then leave the paint to re-establish itself as a gel. Ideally though, store tins upside down, then any surface liquid will be at the bottom when you open the tin so you don't need to strir it.

Just leave your shelves, I am sure they will dry in time.Help my gloss paint wont dry. What shall I do?
Paint dries by absorbing oxygen from the atmosphere. Ralcalcitrant paint like this just needs a bit of encouragement by aiming a fan at it.
You should leave it in the sun to 'cook' for a few more hours.
You should have washed the shelves with sugar soap. And you should have given the tin of paint a good shake. Go back to where you bought it and explain they should be able to give you some remedy, because it's a mess now. You may have a claim as you did what it told you to do on the tin. Check the instructions it may have said shake do not stir if so no claim.

    Good Luck.
It won't dry because there is not enough pigment for the gloss to adhere to. It will be sticky and never quite dry as if you varnished over a layer that hadn't dried. (same principle)

The dark liquid was the bonding agent that needs to be stirred down into the pigment. As the pigment comes up when stirred they bond together for form a gloss finish.
You always stir or shake paint. All you've done is ';paint the oils on. It'll take longer to dry. Stir the paint and paint them over so you get a proper coat.
    put the heating on!

High Gloss paint lost its glossiness?

I hope I STOPPEDyou from doing the above, as a painting contractor take my word on this..do not use any type of turpentine or mineral spirits ...on many other thing that would be correct ...not on suede...they will literally melt or birnish the suede...if thepaint is latex get some denatured alchol and put a little on the tip of a rag, then slowlt dab the spot to loosen the dried paint as it loosens up.wipe it with a dry rag dabbiit up as well ..dont ruf an you will smear it over a wider area. if its an oil based paint,do the same only it will take longer and you may need to dab with a little more pressure...suede is very touchy so go gentlyHow do i get gloss paint off suede?
Try Goof Off. Use a Q-tip and do small sections at time. when its all gone then let it dry and use a suede brush. The Goof Off evaporates. I was able to get White paint off brown suede.

How do i get gloss paint off suede?
DO NOT get suede wet or try a chemical. Suede changes color easily and stains. Get a suede brush and try picking it off dry.... If you got a large amount of suede on a coat or your sofa.... I would just toss the coat or try a dry cleaner. A sofa on the other hand- you're going to have to try and pick/brush it off. They do make suede cleaner but again it's really a brush to loosen the dirty. If it's really bad, I would try a slip cover and plan for buying a new sofa. Suede is a lurxery product and doesn't hold up to the elments or abuse very well. And any chemical that is unsafe for your hands- will eat through leather.

    Sorry!

Also check the tag and make sure it's 100% real suede! If it's a fake suede which most sofa and such are made out of- then you can get it wet. Use the chemicals as suggested about and then steamclean the whole sofa/object to remove all the chemicals!
if oil based use lacquer thinner if latex use denatured alcohol. test on coat in a spot that does not show inside collar maybe

I painted my wood kitchen cabinets w/oil primer & semi-gloss paint. Can I put some kind of gloss on top?

I was thinking of polyurethane finish. Would this work and what kind? I know there is water and oil based. Will that work with the type of paint I have or should I use something else. I painted my cabinets white. Thanks!I painted my wood kitchen cabinets w/oil primer %26amp; semi-gloss paint. Can I put some kind of gloss on top?
Polyurethane will work , at lease 2 coats and remember to sand in between coats with steel wool for a really slick smooth finish.

  • Painted kitchen cabinets with semi-gloss paint and they are sticky it has been 2 days. Whats wrong?

either it's to cold for them to dry or to much humidity in the air........ Good Luck :)Painted kitchen cabinets with semi-gloss paint and they are sticky it has been 2 days. Whats wrong?
It's probably too humid for the paint to dry. If you're using your kitchen (i.e. boiling water on the stove, etc.) you may be increasing the humidity. If you have a dehumidifier that may work for you.Painted kitchen cabinets with semi-gloss paint and they are sticky it has been 2 days. Whats wrong?
The basic reason for paint not curing properly is first, if its an oil base...was it mixed (shaken) properly?

Also which covers all paint is the air temperature and humidity. If the room is cold or warm and damp you have a poor situation for the paint.

I hope its not the first problem with oil for that would need to be removed.

    Good luck
The paint still hasn't completely dried or cured. It takes a couple of weeks, depending on the amount of moisture in the air.

How do I remove old gloss paint from brass?

The brass item has an irregular surfaceHow do I remove old gloss paint from brass?
I have just cleaned some antique Victorian brass lighting fittings. They are very ornate with all sorts of crevices in them. I used Nitromors Paint Stripper. Wearing rubber gloves and protective goggles, apply the stripper with a paintbrush. Allow the process to do its thing and when you see the paint shrivel up, take an old tooth brush to completely remove all the paint. Rinse with cold water when you have removed all residue. This job is best done out of doors or at least in a well ventilated area. How do I remove old gloss paint from brass?
removing anything from a brass is really difficult unless you pay them what they ask
Gel paint stripper will remove the most stubborn paint from brass without any damage to the brass. Buy in a paint store, hardware store. Scrub afterwards.
    elbowgrease
Stripper would get it off but it will also remove any other finish that's on it. Paint thinner might get it off but I kinda doubt it.
if the old paint is oil based you can try aceatone its an acid that only eats away at organic material and wont hurt the brass
Paint stripper and an old tooth brush
Nitromoss or Nitromorse will do the job, it's a paint stripper.
use heat and heat only. Any strippers or anything like that will ruin the brass. Get the paint hot with even just a hair blower and use something with a plastic edge to scrape the paint off. It will come off pretty easy when it gets hot enough.
any paint stripper will do the trick.
Paint stripper %26amp; steel wool (grade 4, wear rubber goves)

then wash with warm, soapy water.
you would be better of not painting brass, it usually looks ok in brass colour!!
