Can i put gloss paint directly over semi-gloss paint?

i am painting a door. i painted it in semi gloss paint but think i would like it in gloss.the paint is very similar in colour to the wall paint which is semi-gloss but i thought the contrast in texture would be better and it would be a lot less work than priming it first.Can i put gloss paint directly over semi-gloss paint?
Double check the instructions on the can, but I would imagine it would be ok to do. If you were going flat over semi-gloss or hi-gloss, I'd recommend roughing the surface first with fine sandpaper (and maybe you might still want to do this...).Can i put gloss paint directly over semi-gloss paint?
use 220 grit and sand off the gloss. Doors look better in a gloss enamel. There are water base enamels now.

Applying a coat of paint over another coat (regardless of colors) without priming the old paint is a recipe for disaster. Especially with a gloss undercoat, there is nothing for the new paint to adhere to. Assuming the paint goes on evenly without separating from the gloss layer (bare gaps or landslide-looking drips), it will be very susceptible to peeling once it's dry. And, if it does peel, you'll probably be able to pull strips of paint off like a banana peel.





To prevent this from happening, you should sand the original paint to give the primer a surface to adhere to. Then prime the door, let it dry (at least a couple of hours, more in humid conditions), and then paint with the semigloss.





The extra work will be worth the outcome. Cutting corners will just cause you extra work later, when you have to strip off the semigloss paint and do it all over again.
