When painting furniture with latex semi-gloss paint, which clear topcoat should I use?

I'm chemically sensitive and want something with low fumes and toxicity. A local store recommended an indoor water-based polyurythane. The latex is a bit tacky on primed pine, but better on non-primed oak. To give it a nice hard finish, I need a top coat and recommend your suggestions. I'm having fun with these projects and want to do a nice job. Thank you! When painting furniture with latex semi-gloss paint, which clear topcoat should I use?
I would go with what the guy in the store said to use . But wait until your paint is thoroughly dry before you use the clear coat. Or it could lift on you. When painting furniture with latex semi-gloss paint, which clear topcoat should I use?
Indoor water-based polyurethane is good and they don't have too much odor.

But if you are painting with latex gloss or semi gloss you shouldn't need a top coat. Glosses are durable.

It kind of depends what your project actually is. I paint a lot of furniture for a living as well as murals and I use combinations of differing products. On the whole for highly decorated furniture I tend to use oil bound varnishes as they seem to be more durable but the new polyurethanes are pretty good.

If you want to have a look at the stuff that I paint go to the link below and look in the furniture section, they are all finished with oil. I realise that the smell may be too much for you while painting but once dry there is no smell.
Actually you are done. It does not really need a topcoat. But if you really want one you can get a water-based polyurythane 'varnish'. It should work perfectly.

For a perfect finish the coat beneath it should be thoroughly dry and lightly sanded so and uneven parts are removed.
