We bought a house and they have painted every single room in semi gloss paint my question is?

If semi gloss is on the walls can I paint over it with latex satin cause thats what I bought. I was talking to a friend and they said that latex satin would not dry on semi gloss paint that I would have to sand it or prime it and thats way to much work the rooms are huge. Could someone please tell me if i can paint over semi gloss with latex satin. We bought a house and they have painted every single room in semi gloss paint my question is?
i think you should be ok i would paint the smallest room and see what happensWe bought a house and they have painted every single room in semi gloss paint my question is?
I do not agree with your friend. The satin paint will dry on top of the semigloss. It dries slower, but it will be fine. I have done this several times. It will not stick as well however, as the semi-gloss does not allow the new paint to penetrate as well as the first coat did.

I still think you will be satisfied with the result however. If you are worried about it you can apply some deglosser to the walls first.
I'm a 37 year experienced painter and the satin will be fine..make sure the walls are clean is all and paint right over it...this is providing the semi gloss is also a latex based paint, which more than likely it is now days...No need to prime it as suggested here..just make sure you wash the walls down good first..then rinse any residue off with fresh clean water afterwards and paint away..
Yes, you can, but you may have to prep the walls a bit. Give them a wash with TSP (sold in paint departments), you don't have to , but the finish might be nicer and less coats of paint. Otherwise, paint away, you are painting on paint so it will still adhere to the surface.
To save yourself a lot of grief, go to the hardware store and explain - those people on the paint depts are great! They will change what you bought unless it was a custom color.

You might have to buy primer if things don't match up before you paint with what you bought.

I know what I want to tell you but would hate it if it didn't work out and it cost you a lot of money.

Get what I call 'kosher' information' that is...from the experts!
You usually put two coats of paint on a wall anyway so that the color is even. When you use primer like Kiltz you normally only have to paint one coat because Kiltz primes the wall and helps the paint to not soak in, and you will not need a second coat of paint.
TSP really is the answer. Follow the directions on the container. You've already gotten suggestions to wash the walls, which you should do any time you paint, so use that and you'll be fine!
wash the walls with dawn dish washing liquid or a good degreasing dishwashing detergtent and just paint the walls.satin and semi gloss are so close in sheen that the bond wil be fine.painter for 30 yrs.

I didn't find anything that said it would be effective to just paint over it. I think the deglosser is your best option, doesn't seem to be as much work as priming or sanding.
why don't you just paint a small test patch of wall behind a door to see if it dries properly?
latex will work fine over semi gloss...it will stick fine and not peel
iono but semi gloss paint works over white out
take the time and use a primer first.
